Tunnel Plank Battens

These are the eleven battens to which the plywood tunnel plank will be attached.

Unlike what you may see in some of the photos in these instructions, the plans provide for all the tunnel-plank battens to make a straight run from transom to stem. I built my boat with some of the battens curving inward toward the bow, for reasons now forgotten and with less-than-perfect results.

Most of the battens are softwood, but three of them are oak. These hardwood battens will provide a place for screwing down the fuel tank, battery, seat, etc. The center batten in my boat is oak; the two either side of it are pine; the next two are again oak.

Stem Cleat

From the transom up to frame 1, the battens lie in the notches already provided. A cleat, however, will need to be added to the stem to provide attachment.

Because the jig uprights get in the way, you will have to make the cleat in three parts, one long piece between the uprights and two shorter ones outboard of them.

Limbers

On each side of the boat, the outer two 1" wide battens need limbers right at transom beam. This will allow any water that gets under the decks to run into the cockpit where it can be removed with a sponge.

Install Battens

Secure the battens and cleats with screws and epoxy. The picture also shows the sheer clamps in place -- see next page....
